Young 5’s/Foundational Kindergarten
In the State of Michigan, children have the option of going to a Young 5's program if they turn 5 between June 1st and September 1st of that school year. This program is a bridge between preschool and kindergarten, most students will be on a two kindergarten program. All students entering into kindergarten or young 5s will be assessed prior to being enrolled. This is done to ensure that they are in the correct classroom.
The Young 5’s/Foundational Kindergarten program is designed to support younger learners who may benefit from a transitional year. The curriculum is based on kindergarten standards modified to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of our younger students. Children adjust to the social and academic demands of school in a fun, hands-on environment. Young 5 provides ‘the gift of time’ so younger learners can succeed in Kindergarten. Teachers help them develop social, motor and academic skills necessary to prosper in a regular kindergarten class. Key areas of learning include:
